Have I mentioned I have a sweet tooth? I love desserts! Usually my dessert for the day consist of a piece of dark chocolate or sautéed pears with cinnamon – yum! But lately this cold weather has triggered a craving for something warm and sweet. Apple pie is one of my favorite desserts during the Fall season. However, making a crust for a pie is really not my forte. So, I decided to make apple crisp since it’s easy to make and I know it will satisfy my sweet tooth!

This sweet fruit packs in a good amount of soluble fiber, particularly in the skin. This is why in my recipe I did not peel the apples so that I can get the most nutrition. Leaving the skin on helps me get some fiber into my diet. Apples also contain Vitamin C, which plays a role in producing skin cells and helps absorb iron in our body.

Because apples are naturally sweet, I tried to limit the amount of sugar added to this recipe. I did however add a good amount of cinnamon to make it more Fall-like (it also made the kitchen smell nice!). To make this dessert vegan-friendly, I used vegan butter from Earth Balance but you can easily substitute your favorite unsalted butter if you'd like. If you’d like some crunch to your dessert, try adding some walnuts or pieces of pecans. This will provide some healthy fats.

So, the next time you have to bring a dessert to a holiday dinner party, try making this easy apple crisp that everyone will enjoy. It’s a guilt-free dessert that offers sweetness without compromising too much nutritional value. The best part about this fairly easy dessert: you can make it year round!
